Happy Fitness Wednesday y’all!

Yesterday we introduced a fun new series to the Blog.  If you missed our post click HERE to check it out!

Today we are discussing OVERHEAD PRESSES. The images are shot by Allen Ayres of Bellafotografica and are done inside World Gym Express Beaumont, and the guy spotting me is Marshall, my trainer.

As we mentioned yesterday every post will include “what?”, “how?”, and “why?” I asked Marshall to do the write-up for this part since ya know he’s the professional. 🙂

WHAT?

“This lift is called overhead press, also known as military press. This exercise works the deltoids, trapezius, and other small shoulder muscles.” – Marshall

HOW?

“The lift is performed by grasping the bar about shoulder width, maybe slightly wider. Hold the bar just above the clavicles (collar bone) and press it directly over head then lower it down in a controlled manner back to the starting position.”- Marshall

We typically do 3-4 “sets” of each movement. A set consists of 12-15 reps of each movements, with a short recovery rest in between each set. We also add weight after each set.  Here’s a different angle with more weight.

Finish: Notice how my head “pokes” through my arms.

WHY?

“Overhead strength will benefit many areas of your every day life. Think about the last time you tried to store that heavy box on the top shelf… This is a multi joint movement which means it uses several muscles to do the job and builds overall shoulder strength. Good strong shoulders help prevent injuries due to the inability to hold a load stable while doing work. Having nice shoulder muscle makes the upper body look wider which makes the waist look smaller!”- Marshall

So there you have it, our first Fitness Wednesday post! Hope you enjoyed and are looking forward to each week’s post!

Until next time,

Xoxo, Tamara
