Meet Sarah!
Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for contributing to our vendor feature!
Q. Can you give us a little history of Sarah e. Evans Photography?
A. Certainly! Shortly after my first son was born, like any other mom I wanted to be able to take better shots of him growing up, so we invested into a good DSLR camera. Shortly after that, about a month, a good friend of ours was getting married and was not hiring a photographer, and had asked if I would take the shots for their wedding. I explained that I barely knew how to work my camera but was told whatever I got would be better than nothing. Shortly after their wedding when everyone had seen their images, I started getting calls and emails about doing pictures. And before I knew it, I had a business on my hands! I always like to say it “fell into my lap” but looking back now I see it has always been apart of me. I can recall when I was younger taking my sisters outside or setting up backdrops inside and taking their pictures for fun! Also right before getting my DSLR camera and starting my business, one of my sisters was in a preliminary Miss Texas Teen USA pageant and I had taken her photo for the book and for her to submit for Miss Photogenic, turns out she won Miss Photogenic! Now, yes my sister is beautiful, but i must admit I was so pleased that she won that title and I had taken her picture with just a standard digital camera! ; )
Q. How long have you been in photography?
A. Well I have been in “business” for about 3 1/2 years now. And loving every minute of it! I started with weddings and dabbled in just about every genre and made my home in “weddings, boudoir, and HS Seniors (girls only)”!
Q. What is your favorite part about helping brides plan for their big day?
A. Hmm… Seeing a friend get married. My clients and I really do form a close bond and a friendship grows before the BIG day. So often my brides will ask my opinion on details for the wedding or what they should do about certain things. I love getting to give my little bit of advice and I also get to hear and in vision the wedding day before so it makes me feel like a “girlfriend” of sorts!
Q. Another aspect of your business is your boudoir photography, how did you decide you wanted to go into this field and how long have you been doing it?
A. While pregnant with my first son, I found a photographer in Houston who was doing Boudoir photography and SO wanted to have it done. It was very tasteful and classy and something I wish I would have known about before getting pregnant or even married! I booked my session while I was pregnant for 9 months later as a way to lose all the baby weight and help me reach my goal. I couldn’t have been happier when my session came and loved it. It was so empowering to know that I still looked beautiful after having a baby and a C-section scar. It was a true self confidence booster. I then quickly realized how I felt about it and wanted to give other women the same experience and feeling. I really believe every woman is beautiful just the way she is, rather she thinks she is overweight, has bad burned scars, a medical problem or for any reason at all! I have been doing Boudoir Photography for about 3 years now.
Q. We’ve talked about when you started doing boudoir it wasn’t popular in our area of southeast Texas, did you expect boudoir photography to be such a big industry now?
A. I knew the people in the SETX area are a bit more “conservative” and that was a risk I was willing to take. BUT I also knew there would be women out there like me wanting to feel positive about themselves and accepting to the idea of Boudoir. I really didn’t think of how “big of an industry” it could be or would be. But it was evident to me after being featured in the VIP of Southeast Texas in the article about Boudoir photography and it’s growing popularity!
Q. What can women expect from a boudoir session with you?
A. I work to my clients comfort level as well as my own. (i don’t do “nudity”, implied nudity is completely fine!) Woman can expect to feel relaxed and at ease, as I coach them along during their session. I pride myself in really directing you along and even showing you examples (even when i was 7month pregnant! haha ). I want their experience to be fabulous so they keep coming back for boudoir sessions! As I have had repeating clients! Which does make me smile and know that I am doing something right! ; )
Q. Since you are also a wife and mom of two sweet little boys, what advice can you give other women who juggle so many different responsibilities?
A. Oh this one might be a little harder to answer.. LOL ONLY because I have no idea how I do it sometimes! I always get asked that and answer, “I have no idea”! I do work from home and joggle being photographer/business owner, wife and most important MOM. I feel my little boys and I have developed a good morning routine with breakfast followed by playtime in the playroom while I work in my office space. Usually in the afternoons (on non shooting days) we play together by going outside, reading books, and then cooking dinner. That is where my “wife” responsibilities come in, haha I LOVE to cook so I have allowed the little ones in the kitchen to help during that time and hopefully develop the same love for it as i do. It is SO important to not get over whelmed with “work” and just relax every now and then, I take at least one day off away from the “office” a week by taking the boys to do something fun or maybe just a little shopping! My husband and I are both business owners so we started making Tuesday night Movie night (in) after the boys go to bed. It is our time to relax and enjoy each other’s company since we don’t always get that on the weekends! And one more thing! Remember if you are running a business at home then really make your hours “business hours”. Set a certain time that you step away from “work” yes that means phone calls and emails. Think of it this way, can you call most businesses in the evening and get someone? I am not saying there aren’t nights where I am busy editing, but for the vast majority the answer is no. ; ) You have to enjoy your family time!
